Here are some snippets of my favorite weekend of the year—MoCCA Fest (a festival in NYC all about the world of comics & cartoon art)!
I met some of my favorite cartoonists (@heyheysu @natandrewson), discovered new ones (special shoutouts to @adamsuerte @mattielubchansky & @john_vasquez_mejias whose work I particularly loved), & learned a TON from panels/live comic performances (thank you @kartalopoulos for wonderful moderating). Everyone was so warm & welcoming. I’m blown away & humbled by these artists—the dedication to their craft & creativity.
As someone in the ~very~ early stages of building a comics career, it all felt a little daunting.
So much brilliance in one place can make it tempting to feel discouraged (how will I ever do anything even remotely close to that incredible?). I’m choosing instead to feel encouraged & inspired & in awe. These artists show me just how remarkable it is that I can push myself way more than I thought possible. How cool it is that I can come up with entire worlds. How special it is that there are so many people connected by the love of this art form.

My favorite quote from the weekend:
“I try to make work that inspires my daughter & I try to make work that I love. I try to stay away from ‘am I doing good enough’ or ‘is this person doing better than me’… nothing good comes from that.” - John Vasquez Mejias, author/artist of The Puerto Rican War.

I try to make comics that I love & want to see in the world (& who knows, maybe you’ll like them too!)—thank you as always for the support & for being along for the ride.
If you need me, I’ll be busy doodling up a storm.
Thanks for reading & I hope you have a lovely rest of your week!
